A product development audit is a great way to explore the complex series of inter-reactions between marketing requirements, engineering challenges and production constraints. Commercial success often depends on the management of these factors to get the best possible result. The purpose of this document is to allow you to examine how projects are managed and implemented at the moment.
A considerable amount of attention is given to the results of the design process, whilst relatively little is said about how that process is managed. This is unfortunate, as good or bad management can make or break a design project, particularly if senior management is involved (which they should be). British Standard BS7000-2 ‘Guide to managing the design of manufactured products’ provides a lot of extremely useful information on this often ignored topic.
