Product design is normally associated with appearance, but it can also be highly technical. SKC manufacture equipment for detecting hazardous dust particles, and their products need to withstand harsh environments and very rough handling. They also need to be ATEX approved, which means that they cannot cause a spark to be produced which could ignite a gaseous environment.
These requirements involve very detailed and exacting testing, not least repeated drops onto concrete from one metre at temperatures as low as minus 5 degrees. We helped SKC develop a new product that met all these requirements whilst still being convenient to carry and easy to use.
The secret to this project was two-shot moulding, that allows hard and soft sections of a casing to be moulded into the same part, providing both strength and flexibility.
