Product design is often associated with appearance or performance, and rightly so. Good design can, however, also deliver great commercial results.
Our work with Suez Water Purification Systems was a case in point. Brought in to update an old range of lab water equipment, we realised that one of the main issues was that the products were all built individually, not as a coherant, modular range.
The project (see download, right) was an exercise in developing a technical system, working out how that could be configured in different ways, and then cladding the modular options with attractive, low cost panels.
Above all, this project demonstrates that one of the main benefits of involving product designers in new development projects is the 'external view' they can bring to bear - simply because they are trained to ask the 'what if' and 'why not' questions...
As Mark Bosley of Suez put it:
"The benefits that Crucible have brought to our business are extensive. Their design input has substantially reduced both production costs and operating overheads. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend their services".
